Each year in the United States, about 5,000 occupational fatalities occur (2017 data). There are also about 2.8 million workers injured or ill in the workplace; 95% of which are injuries. A little more than half of these injuries and illnesses will result in lost workdays. The human and economic impact of injury, illnesses, loss of productivity and death are monumental. The OHN, acting as case manager (CM) and coordinator of health care services from the onset of illness or injury, through rehabilitation and return-to work, or an optimal alternative, is the key to ensure cost containment and quality health care among workers (AAOHN Position Statement on Case Management).
