Epidemiology is the study of factors affecting the health and illness of populations. When the occupational health nurse (OHN) might be looking at implementing a new practice, it is critical to have an understanding of epidemiology and research design. Understanding epidemiologic principles will also assist the OHN with understanding the health and intervention outcomes within the workplace.
This module is part of the 19-module OHN Prep Course Package.
Apply principles of epidemiology to design and evaluate occupational health and/or safety programs.
Analyze individual and aggregate case information for trend analysis and research.
Recognize various study designs (case study, cross-sectional study, case-control study, cohort study, intervention study) and their advantages and disadvantages.
Understanding the principles of epidemiology and research will assist the OHN in implementing research-based practices.
Epidemiological studies can be used b the OHN to help design studies in the workplace.
Information gained with epidemiological research can be applied by the OHN to help control and/or eliminate health problems in the workplace
